Suomen avantgarden ja modernismin seura (Finnish Association for Modernism and Avant-garde, FAM) järjestää 3. kotimaisen seminaarin ja paneelin aiheesta ’Avantgarde, tiede ja teknologia’ Aalto-yliopistossa 29.4. 2019.

Theodor Adornon mukaan tiede ja teknologiset keksinnöt ovat aina kuuluneet taiteeseen, usein taiteen suunnannäyttäjinä, eivätkä parhaat taiteilijat ole koskaan kaihtaneet tiedettä, mistä renessanssin ilmaperspektiivi on esimerkkinä. Myös avantgardetaide on hyödyntänyt ennakkoluulottomasti tieteellisiä teorioita ja uusia teknologioita.

Seminaarin tarkoituksena on selvittää taiteen, tieteen ja teknologian suhteita avantgardetaiteissa ja vastata kysymyksiin, millä tavoin tieteen kehitys on heijastunut taiteiden käytäntöihin ja mitä yhteiskunnallisia seurauksia tällä on ollut. Seminaari on kiinnostunut kolmesta tieteen ja taiteen suhdetta koskevasta aihealueesta:

Viimeaikaisia esimerkkejä taiteen ja tieteen lähentymisestä ovat bio- ja sosiaaliset neurotieteet sekä kognitiotiede, joita on sovellettu taiteen tekemisessä. Sosiaalinen neurotiede on tutkimusalue, jossa tarkastellaan kuinka biologiset systeemit implementoivat sosiaalisia prosesseja. Seminaarissa kysytään, mikä merkitys tällä on taiteen, kirjallisuuden ja kulttuurin tutkimukselle.

Ekologiaa ja posthumanismia koskeva tutkimus on samalla osoittanut ihmisen olevan osa luontoa tavalla, joka velvoittaa antamaan luovuttamattoman (tasa-)arvon kaikille eläville olennoille. Tämä antaa aiheen kysyä, miten nykytaiteet ja kirjallisuus käsittelevät ihmisen suhdetta muuhun luontoon.

Toinen, edelliseen läheisesti liittyvä aihe on tekoäly, joka koskee paitsi tiedonkäsittelyä, myös teknologiaa. AI on perinteisesti ollut tieteiskirjallisuuden leikkikalu, mutta mikä mahtaa olla algoritmien rooli taiteessa postdigitaalisessa nykymaailmassa. Voiko tekoäly, jolta puuttuvat aistimukselliset kokemukset, luoda taidetta?

Kolmas aihealue on tieteen ja taiteen kehitys ja rationaliteetti. Onko taiteessa ylipäätään tieteeseen rinnastettavaa kehitystä ja voidaanko sanoa, että taide seuraa tieteen kehitystä? David Edwards on väittänyt kirjassaan ArtSciencetaiteen ja tieteen metodien olevan perustavalla tavalla erilaisia. Taiteen ajatteluprosessi on kuvallinen, aistillinen ja intuitiivinen erotuksena tieteen ajatteluprosessista, joka on kvantifioiva, analyyttinen, deduktiivinen ja ongelmakeskeinen.  Onko Edwardsin dualistinen kuvaus osuva? Miten taiteen ja tieteen metodien välistä juopaa voitaisiin kuroa yhteen ja saattaa ne hedelmälliseen vuorovaikutukseen?

Pyydämme kaikkia aiheesta kiinnostuneita lähettämään 100 – 150 sanan pituisen esitelmäehdotuksen (20min + 10min keskustelu) seuran sihteerille 15.3. 2019 mennessä osoitteeseen finnishavantgarde@gmail.com. Seminaarin esitelmien pohjalta tullaan julkaisemaan kirja, jonka sisällöstä päättää järjestelytoimikunta.

The Finnish Association for Avant-garde and Modernism studies (FAM) will arrange the 3^rdseminar and panel titled ‘Avant-garde, Science, and Technology’ at the Aalto University on April 29^th2019.

According to Theodor Adorno, theoretical considerations and scientific findings have always amalgamated with arts, often as their bellwethers, and the best artists have never hesitated to use them. The Renaissance aerial perspective is an early example of this. Avant-garde art has from the early 20^thcentury on taken advantage of scientific theories and new technologies.

The aim of the 3rd FAM seminar is to clarify the relationships between art, sciences and technology in avant-garde art and to elucidate how the development of sciences has influenced artistic practices and what is its social impact.

Three subjects concerning the affinity between science and art of special interest.

The life sciences, social neuroscience and cognitive science are all examples of scientific approaches that have recently been applied in art. Social neuroscience studies how biological systems implement social processes. The approach raises the question of its relevance to art theory, literature studies, and cultural studies.

Furthermore, recent research in ecology and post-humanist studies have shown that human beings are part of nature which obligates to consider all living beings in equal terms. Taken that all living beings are equal and have an intrinsic value, the seminar asks, how has the relationship between humans and the rest of nature been considered in contemporary art and literature?

Another subject of interest closely related to the aforementioned is artificial intelligence, which deals not only with algorithms but also technology (such as robots). AI has traditionally been toyed with in science fiction literature but what is the role of algorithms in a post-digital world? Is artificial intelligence, which lacks all sensuous experiences, capable of making art?

The third subject worth considering is the development of and rationality in sciences and art. The seminar asks, whether the development of art is comparable to that of the sciences, and furthermore, does the development of art follow that of science? In his book ArtScience, David Edwards has suggested that the methods of science and art are profoundly different. The thought processes in art are pictorial, sensuous and intuitive while scientific thinking quantifying, analytic, deductive and problem-based. Is Edwards’ dualistic description apt? Is it possible to fill the methodical gap between art and science and to bring them into fruitful interaction?

We warmly invite everyone interested in these subjects to submit a proposal (100 – 150 words) for a paper, whose length should be 20 min. + 10 min discussion, to the secretary of the association finnishavantgarde@gmail.combefore March  15^th2019.
